America’s Best Idea Deserves America’s Support

America’s national parks are often referred to as our nation’s best idea. From Denali to the Everglades, these landscapes tell the story of our country and provide opportunities for hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and outdoor recreation that millions of Americans enjoy every year.

That spirit of conservation has long been one of our country’s most enduring bipartisan traditions. President Theodore Roosevelt understood that conserving that heritage was a mission that transcended politics, because every American benefited from the stewardship of our precious natural resources. That same president famously observed that Americans had “fallen heirs to the most glorious heritage a people ever received, and each one must do his part if we wish to show that the nation is worthy of its good fortune.”

The persistence of that spirit is evidenced by the recent bipartisan introduction of the America the Beautiful Act, sponsored by Representatives Bruce Westerman (R-AR) and Jared Huffman (D-CA). ConservAmerica proudly supports this legislation because it builds on a proven success while ensuring that America’s public lands remain accessible and well-maintained for future generations.

The bill reauthorizes and strengthens the Great American Outdoors Act, one of President Trump’s signature conservation achievements from his first term. That landmark law helped address long-overdue maintenance needs across our national parks and public lands. The America the Beautiful Act continues that work by investing $1.9 billion over five years to restore trails, campgrounds, boat ramps, hunting and fishing access sites, and other critical infrastructure that Americans rely upon to get outside with their families.

This bill recognizes the mountain we still have to climb in addressing the massive backlog of deferred maintenance on National Park Service lands. It includes reforms to streamline project delivery, increase transparency, and improve accountability while ensuring resources are directed toward the highest-priority maintenance needs.

The benefits of this investment extend far beyond our parks. Outdoor recreation supports jobs and economic opportunity in rural communities across the country. By improving visitor experiences and preserving access to public lands, this legislation helps sustain local businesses and gateway communities that depend on tourism and recreation.

As our nation approaches its 250th birthday, there could be no more fitting tribute than investing in the places that reflect America’s natural grandeur and shared heritage. The America the Beautiful Act demonstrates that conservation remains a cause capable of bringing Americans together.

Congress should seize this opportunity and pass this bipartisan legislation, because stewardship of our public lands is not a partisan issue; it’s an American imperative.
