Conservation is Conservative

House Republicans Urge Conservation Funding! We Urge You to Thank them!

On Tuesday (May 29), 32 House Republicans sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) urging his support for legislation protecting funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). The legislation would require that $700 million of the funds dedicated to LWCF be spent for its conservation and recreation purposes in each of the next two years.

The LWCF, established during President Eisenhower’s tenure, pays for buying land with high conservation value from willing sellers and for recreation projects that meet local priorities. It provides critical funding for open space and places to play that are available to all citizens, which in turn pays dividends in quality of life, health, and economic activity. LWCF investments also safeguard water supplies, reduce wildfire losses, and help prevent flooding.

Each year, $900 million in offshore oil and gas leasing revenues are collected specifically for LWCF, but Congress has raided the fund for other purposes.

The 32 Republicans who are standing up for LWCF—and fiscal discipline—deserve hearty thanks from every American who loves the great outdoors. Please let these members of Congress know that you appreciate their effort. The members who signed the letter are as follows:
